New automatic semitruck to enhance truck driver training at MATC
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- For the first time in over a decade, students part of MATC's truck driving program will be able to train using an automatic transmission semitruck.
The new Volvo Sleeper Semitruck is a welcomed addition to the program.
Students like Colemin Sibila say they're excited about the investments made to a program that means a lot to them.
"My dad is a truck driver and I've been going out with him every summer since I was eight. I've learned a lot from him, and I want to make him proud," Sibila said when explaining why he joined the program.
Over the last decade, nearly 500 students have graduated from the MATC trucking program.
Students learn how to operate and maintain truck-trailers and heavy trucks safely and gives them the opportunity to get their class a commercial driver's license.
"I've seen them upgrade a lot of their equipment," said former student, Charlene Lee. Officials say their current fleet is reaching the end of operational use, so this new truck is coming just in time.
Lee says even though trucking is a male dominated field, the program prepared her for success. "We went over that, as far as the lifestyle for women in trucking as opposed to men in trucking. The knowledge that I've gained has made me comfortable to be able to go out and seek employment and to know what to expect," said Lee.
The Volvo brand truck is provided by Kriete Truck Centers. “MATC is one of those institutions that is near and dear to me personally and our company,” said David Kriete, President & CEO, Kriete Truck Centers.
