New Berlin middle schoolers spend time each week getting to know seniors
NEW BERLIN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A heartwarming story about kids giving back to the community.
Every Thursday, students from New Berlin Eisenhower Middle School spend one of their flex periods at Elizabeth Residence.
The senior living facility is right next door to the school.
Students walk over to meet with the residents. They read together, play games and sit and talk, getting to know one another.
"It's very social, everyone's nice," said 8th grader Collin Filkins.
"We get a break, just from school and stress and everything like that, and I think it's just important to talk to people, get to know everybody here," said student Naomi Jacobsen.
The visits are all on a volunteer basis, and school administrators say they are pleased that so many students sign up to participate each week.
