MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Marquette women's basketball team is in the midst of summer workouts at the Al McGuire Center, under the direction of new head coach Cara Consuegra.

Consuegra, who was hired in April, has assembled a roster featuring six returning players and six newcomers. With the new staff in place, the focus is now on preparation and development.

"This whole year will be new for us," said sophomore forward Skylar Forbes.

Despite having numerous questions to address, Consuegra emphasizes patience.

"We're still evaluating what we have and what we're good at. Where we may have some weaknesses. I think to even look past the end of the summer is a mistake," Consuegra said.

None of the returning players were regular starters last season. The transfers range from junior college ranks to Syracuse, and some have a history with Consuegra from her previous tenure at Charlotte. Each player's unique experience is expected to shape the team.

"I already kind of know what Cara is looking for and her play style. So, just making sure everyone is online and doing what they need to do," said Olivia Porter, a junior guard transfer from Charlotte.

"With having a little bit of experience in the Big East, I can help guide my teammates. Some of my other teammates that are returners can also help guide. Just us stepping up in that way is definitely beneficial for the girls," Forbes added.

Consuegra has provided each player with a goal sheet, prioritizing relationship building, with the basketball skills expected to follow naturally.

"We're not having to coach a lot of effort here, which we shouldn’t. That's not something I want to do anyway. But they're really working hard and trying to do the things we want them to do," Consuegra said.
