OAK CREEK, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A pregnant woman who tried to steal from a grocery store went into labor after she was approached by security guards, police say.
It happened Friday, August 2 at the Woodman's in Oak Creek.
According to Oak Creek Police, the woman tried leaving the store with $255 in groceries without paying for them. Police say store security confronted the woman and she was taken into custody but had to be escorted to the women's bathroom because she began to go into labor.
By the time officers arrived at Woodman's she was already in delivery.
Some Woodman's customers say they didn't want to pass judgment because they couldn't help but feel bad for her being in that situation, but others say that shouldn't matter because what she did was wrong.
"I don't know if I would ever do that, but I don't know, maybe it's her circumstances, maybe she's going through a rough time? You can never judge nobody because you don't know what position they're in," said Mini Avila of Oak Creek.
"You shouldn't steal in the first place, so I don't have any feelings about that. It was an event that happened, she went into labor, unfortunately at the same time, but no, you shouldn't steal," said Lisa Meltesen of Oak Creek.
Police say the woman was taken to a local hospital so she could deliver her child. She was later mailed a citation for retail theft.
