MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — Saturday marks one year since historic flooding caused widespread damage across the greater Milwaukee area, and some families are still dealing with the physical and emotional aftermath.

Jessica Young's family was rescued from their home during the flooding. She said the disaster caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage and destroyed two of the family's vehicles.

A year later, repairs are still underway, while the experience continues to weigh on her family whenever heavy rain returns.

"It is pretty stressful, and my son has brought it up a few times when it rains," Young said. "He will ask if it's going to flood."

Young said she hopes the City of Wauwatosa remains vigilant with efforts to prevent similar flooding in the future.

The storms also caused severe flooding inside the valet parking garage at Potawatomi Casino Hotel, destroying dozens of vehicles.

James Rosenthal was staying at the hotel while attending a Milwaukee Brewers game. He woke up to find his vehicle had been totaled.

For Rosenthal, the loss carried an added emotional toll. The vehicle had belonged to his wife before she died from ALS.

"I know the rain came fast, but other parts were flooding before this all happened, so they could have taken a look at that and how long the rain was going to last and say, 'Hey, maybe we should get these cars to the upper level or something,'" Rosenthal said.

A year later, Rosenthal said insurance helped him replace the vehicle, but he still wonders whether more could have been done to prevent the loss.

For families affected by the flooding, the anniversary serves as a reminder that recovery can continue long after the water recedes.
