Packers set initial 53-man roster

GREEN BAY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Packers have officially set their roster for week one of the 2024 season by releasing 34 players Tuesday.

Greg Joseph won the team's kicking competition as Green Bay cut last year's sixth-round pick, Anders Carlson. Both Joseph and Carlson struggled at times in the pre-season, but Joseph has much more experience after starting the last three seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Packers cut both backup quarterbacks Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt just a day after trading for Malik Willis. At least one of them will likely re-join the team on the practice squad and could be elevated to the active roster for the first couple of games while Willis learns the playbook.

Former starter Royce Newman, preseason standout Kristian Welch and safety Anthony Johnson Jr. were also cut.

Fan favorite AJ Dillon was not cut, but the running back's season is over. The Packers are placing Dillon on season ending injured reserve with a neck injury.
