'People have rights': Immigration lawyer urges immigrants to stay calm, have a plan
MILWAUKEE (CBS58) — The risk of mass deportation is top of mind for immigrants in Milwaukee since President Donald Trump took office.
On Wednesday, city leaders and local nonprofit Forward Latino came together to address those concerns.
"These children were born in the United States and they are citizens however their parents were taken away," said Lourdes Castillo.
Former principal of Escuela Vieau Public School in South Milwaukee, Lourdes Castillo, recalled the last time a raid happened and the impact she says it had on her students.
"We had no way of getting in contact with the parents," said Castillo.
Forward Latino urged immigrants at risk to have a plan.
"If you don't have a plan, create one as soon as possible. It's not too late," said Ald. José Peréz, president of the Milwaukee Common Council.
The nonprofit is providing a planning toolkit for mixed-status families.
"Having emergency contacts determining who will take care of your kids, and if you can afford a lawyer - consider retaining one sooner or later," said Peréz.
They also say even if you have legal immigration status, to carry your green card, work permit, or other evidence of status with you at all times.
According to the United States Census Bureau, as of July 2023, in Milwaukee, 10.8% of our population were born outside of the U.S.
Immigration lawyer Kevin Layde says if the worst happens, you can fight it.
"I think the biggest area of fear for people right now is the unknown. Remember, if a person is detained, there are often things they can do to fight against deportation, potentially leave immigration custody, and sometimes even remain here in the United States," said Layde.
He wants to remind immigrants to know their rights.
"People have rights, and those rights include not answering questions and not opening the door," said Layde.
Layde says to remain calm during this time and to just be as prepared as possible. He says if you do get detained, do not sign anything without a lawyer present.
