Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin launching vasectomy services
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A partnership between Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin (PPWI) and the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) will result in the launch of safe and affordable no-scalpel vasectomy services.
The service is set to begin on Thursday, Feb. 16 and will be provided at the PPWI Water Street Health Center located at 435 S. Water St.
The aim is expanding access to birth control options for men, who have shown an increased interest in vasectomies after the U.S Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, according to a press release issued by PPWI.
The procedure is covered by some commercial insurance providers, Medicaid and self-pay options are also available.
According to PPWI's press release, Innerbody Research reported a significant increase in internet searches for "where can I get a vasectomy" following recent Supreme Court activity that triggered some abortion bans across the nation. The partnership between MCW and PPWI will provide local patients with another option for accessing vasectomy services.
Two MCW urologists will join the patient services team at the PPWI Water Street location to offer this new service.
Dr. Jay Sandlow, Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of Urology at MCW, expressed pride in partnering with PPWI to increase access to vasectomy services. He said, “Many patients seeking vasectomy services may not regularly see a primary care physician or a urologist, making it difficult for them to receive this type of care. PPWI has long been a trusted resource in the community for contraceptive care, and we are thrilled to work with them to address this need.”
In addition to vasectomy services, PPWI also provides men and those assigned male at birth with other services such as STD testing and treatment, and HIV testing and education. The organization says that the latest vasectomy access is the first of several service rollouts planned for 2023 to help meet the growing health care needs.
