Milwaukee officer involved shooting leaves 1 suspect dead, another in custody
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police say one suspect is in custody and another is dead after a Milwaukee police officer shot him, saying police asked several times for him to put the gun down.
Neighbors say they are shaken up.
"It's just sad that this happens day in day out," said Tyrone Okelley, neighbor.
Milwaukee police say they got a call around 3:15 Saturday afternoon, with the report of two people entering a business on 32nd street. Police say the caller claimed one of the suspects fired shots towards them.
MPD says when they responded, they saw two suspects near 37th and Fairmount.
"Officers approached the armed suspect and gave several commands to drop the gun, an officer discharged their firearm subsequently striking the suspect," said Chief Jeffrey Norman.
MPD says the suspect with the firearm was a 41-year-old man who died from the gunshot wound. The second suspect, a 34-year-old man was arrested. No one else was injured.
Neighbors in the area say crime like this isn't new and is becoming a serious issue.
"Here, living on the north side, this has been going on for quite some time which is sad to say, but it's almost common," said Okelley.
However, neighbors say it's uneasy being so close to their doorstep.
"It just makes you feel more cautious of your surroundings and just got to be more careful around here," said Rodney Harris, neighbor.
"When it gets really, really, close to your front door, back door it makes you wonder, it makes you think, so I just hope people get themselves together and stop all the madness," said Okelley.
Chief Norman held a press conference earlier tonight and said that the officer who shot the suspect is a 43-year-old man with over 10 years of service.
He was placed on administrative leave as is routine in officer involved investigations. Wauwatosa police are leading the investigation.
