Plans announced for new affordable housing subdivision, Oak Creek students to assist with build

OAK CREEK, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley announced plans Monday, to build an affordable housing subdivision in Oak Creek. This marks the first-ever affordable housing subdivision in a suburban community in Milwaukee County.

For Crowley, this marks a major step toward addressing the housing crisis in our hometowns.

"This is what it looks like to lift up our community," Crowley said. "And when we do that, when we prioritize the needs of those who are too often left behind, we create a stronger, healthier, more equitable Milwaukee County for all of us who call this place home."

And there's an interesting angle to the construction process revealed to us by a teacher from Oak Creek High School.

"We have a capstone course called Knight Construction, where students are able to be off sites in the second half of the school day and build a house throughout the course of the school year," Oak Creek HS construction instructor Matthew Lonergan said.

Lonergan says his students have had hands-on roles in building homes for 11 years, and after discussions with Milwaukee County, he says Oak Creek students will be involved in the construction of the new affordable subdivision.

Lonergan addressed concerns people might have about high school students helping with the construction.

"The houses that we build go through the same inspection process any builder would go through," he said. "And I'll be honest, I have high expectations. I'm a contractor, so I have a contracting license, so expectations are pretty high. And you know, if things aren't done right, we fix it, we make 'em right."

The timeline for the project has not yet been determined, but officials say the groundbreaking will be held soon.
