‘Please slow down’: Push to end speeding and reckless driving along Kinnickinnic Ave. continues
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - The city of Milwaukee is working to reduce speeding and reckless driving on Kinnickinnic Ave. from Fulton St. to Holt Ave.
“The city is really truly facing an epidemic in reckless driving, and this is one of our tools to create a safer city for people that are walking, biking, and driving,” Milwaukee Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic said. “Please slow down.”
The city has formed a plan that would implement raised crosswalks, bump outs, speed tables, and high visibility cross walks along the stretch of road.
A public meeting was held on Tuesday night, Nov. 11, to hear additional feedback from the community and share the plan.
“If you don’t feel safe in your own community on your own sidewalks and streets I don’t think we’re doing the right thing as a city,” Dimitrijevic said.
People living in the neighborhood agree with the idea that the road is unsafe.
“I live on KK just a couple doors down and I myself had to shovel up a cat that got hit,” Milwaukee resident Christian Phillips said. “We feel like we might be able to slow down some of this traffic, save some lives.”
For the city to be able to go through with the project, residents will have to partially pay out of their own pockets.
Homeowners will be required to pay $15 per linear foot of their house, either as a one-time payment or over a period of 10 years.
Cars are speeding past, they're not stopping for pedestrians, and it feels really unsafe,” Milwaukee resident Sarah Jones said. “For our kids, for our families it’s certainly worth it to me.”
