Police motorcycles head to Washington D.C to honor fallen officers, including MPD Officer Peter Jerving
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- It was a bittersweet Wednesday morning for families of fallen officers across Southeastern Wisconsin as dozens of motorcycles were loaded onto a semi-truck and headed to the nation's Capital.
Moments like this are a reminder of what Patty Jerving has lost.
“I do talk to him," said Jerving, "I don’t think he can hear me, but I want to think that he might.”
While reflecting on her grief, Jerving reflected on the man her son had become.
"He lived and died by the values that his dad and I instilled in him," said Jerving.
More than a year ago, Milwaukee Police Officer Peter Jerving was killed in the line of duty.
“He gave his all," said Jerving.
Now, Peter will be honored in Washington D.C.
“All of these police motorcycles from Southeast Wisconsin go out to Washington D.C and they provide escorts for families, loved ones of fallen officers," said Mark McClain with House of Harley Davidson.
Harley Davidson, along with Haul Bikes will help transport the police motorcycles to Washington D.C for National Police Week.
“Let everybody see how important it is – the first responders that protect us every day," said McClain.
A candlelight vigil will be held at the national mall where Officer Jerving's name will be read, along with 282 other fallen officers.
“We never imagined when we gave him that name that it would be finally in so many places, you know. All over the city of Milwaukee, all over the state, and now in Washington D.C," said Jerving.
For Patty Jerving, this is a reminder of what her son gave to Milwaukee.
“We believe that Peter deserves all those honors, but I know he would be very humbled by it all," said Jerving.
