Protest against President Trump's immigration policies held on Milwaukee's south side
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A large crowd of people showed their outrage over President Donald Trump’s immigration policies through a protest near the Mitchell Park Domes on Sunday, Feb. 9.
The Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression helped organize the march. Alan Chavoya, a leader with the group, said he believes it is important for mass movements to challenge the Trump administration’s agenda.
“A lot of people in Milwaukee clearly care for this issue. Milwaukee is an immigrant city. It’s been an immigrant city," Chavoya said. “We’re trying to work with people to make sure they understand what is happening, understand what their rights are and to build unity.”
This march was part of the Legalization For All Network’s national week of action, which has included protests in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Tampa Bay, and others.
Those who attended the protest, like Alondra Garcia with Voces de la Frontera, said people in immigrant communities are scared of increased mass deportations from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“We can’t show weakness, we can’t show fear, we gotta show that we have rights," Garcia said. “I’m very disappointed in the fact that our country has come to this."
CBS 58 reached out to local officials with ICE for this story, asking for information about deportations and detentions in Milwaukee. We've received no response.
