MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — Dozens of people gathered on Milwaukee's south side Sunday to protest recent immigration enforcement actions and call for changes to federal immigration policy.

The ICE Out of Milwaukee Coalition organized the rally at Clarke Square Park, bringing together several local advocacy groups.

Organizers said the demonstration was prompted by the recent death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston during an encounter with federal immigration agents.

"We're hoping that with a march and a rally that we can say 'no, this is not commonplace, this is enough to get you on the streets and come together to try and make a change,'" said Jennifer Melo of Voces de la Frontera.

According to organizers, Salgado Araujo was killed after ICE agents attempted to locate another individual.

The Department of Homeland Security said agents believed Salgado Araujo may have been the person they were seeking and attempted to stop his van. DHS said an agent fatally shot Salgado Araujo after he allegedly refused commands and attempted to ram law enforcement.
