Racine man faces charges of attempted sexual exploitation by a therapist, repeated sexual abuse of a child

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 37-year-old pastor from Racine is accused of sexual assault.

Bernabe Leon Alvarez is facing multiple charges, including attempted sexual exploitation by a therapist, repeated sexual assault of a child, and child enticement.

According to a criminal complaint, Alvarez allegedly assaulted more than one victim.

The first complaint was reported by an 18-year-old who -- according to officials -- knew Alvarez through mutual connections and he was the pastor of her former church.

The complaint says, the victim's first incident involving Alvarez was in August of 2020 -- when she was 14 years old. The victim recalled, according to officials, being touched inappropriately by Alvarez at a church camping event.

The criminal complaint describes several incidents following the church camping trip where Alvarez allegedly assaulted the young victim.

Another victim came forward and told investigators when she was 17 years old, she also had several encounters with Alvarez. During those incidents, the victim told officials Alvarez touched her inappropriately.

Alvarez is being held on a $10,000 cash bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 31.
