Racine & Me: Event brings community together to support foster families and prevent child abuse
RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) — Families are invited to enjoy an afternoon of free activities while learning how they can help protect and support children across Racine County.
The 2nd Annual Racine County Foster Care Community Carnival and Together We SCAN Walk will take place Saturday, Aug. 15, at Grace Church, 3626 Highway 31 in Racine.
The event is a collaboration between Racine County Human Services Foster Care, Grace Church and BeLEAF Survivors Inc. Its goal is to connect families with community resources, raise awareness about child abuse prevention and highlight the ongoing need for foster parents in Racine County.
Walk registration begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by the free community carnival from noon to 3 p.m.
The carnival will feature more than 20 community organizations, interactive activities, a bounce house, face painting, balloon artists, music, family entertainment and K-9 demonstrations. Families can also enjoy free pizza from Domino's Racine and ice cream.
The Together We SCAN Walk supports SCAN, or Stop Child Abuse and Neglect, a program that provides children with age-appropriate personal safety education and helps connect families with local resources.
Walk registration costs $10, or $25 with a commemorative event T-shirt. Children 6 and younger can participate for free.
Organizers say the walk serves as a reminder that protecting children is a shared community responsibility.
The event will also give attendees an opportunity to learn more about becoming foster parents. Racine County continues to need safe, stable and loving homes for children in foster care.
Those who are unable to foster can still make a difference by volunteering, donating, mentoring children, supporting local organizations or helping spread awareness.
The event is open to families from Racine County and surrounding communities.
