Racine & Me: Meet the Owner of Stitched Quilt Shop in Downtown Racine

RACINE, WIS (CBS 58) -- We sat down with the owner and manager of Stitched Quilt Shop in studio to learn more about the dream behind this space and the community it's creating in Downtown Racine.

At Stitched, we believe creativity isn’t just something you do; it’s something that connects you. Stitched is a modern neighborhood quilt and sewing shop in Racine, designed to feel less like a store and more like a gathering place. Whether you’re a lifelong quilter, a curious beginner, or someone who just wants to make something with your hands again, you belong here.
Our main message is simple: making is for everyone – and it’s better when we do it together. We curate beautiful, high-quality fabrics and offer approachable, hands-on classes that meet people wherever they are in their creative journey. But more than that, we’re creating space – for learning, for slowing down, for conversation, and for community. From our cutting table (which feels like a kitchen
table) to The Snug (our cozy stitching space), everything is designed to invite people in and help them stay awhile.

Our mission is to reignite creativity, build confidence through making, and create meaningful human
connection – one stitch at a time. Because in a fast, digital world, there’s something powerful about working with your hands, sharing
stories, and creating something real. And that’s what Stitched is all about. We have ongoing classes including in April: English Paper Piecing, Foundation Paper Piecing, Beginning Embroidery, and upcoming events like Crafty Moms Day Out, and How to Make An American Quilt –
Stitched Style. We are 100% minority woman owned, and a space for all to feel welcome. A few facts about quilting: The quilting industry in the U.S. is thriving, with 9–11 million active quilters contributing to an estimated $4.5 billion in annual market revenue. The global quilting and hobby-fabric market is valued at over $5 billion and continues to grow as more people seek creative, community-based hobbies.

Yet, despite its size, diversity in quilt shop ownership remains limited. Stitched Quilt Shop stands out as one of a small number of Black-owned quilt and fabric retailers in the Midwest. Latimore’s vision blends inclusivity, artistry, and storytelling – inviting a wider range of makers to see themselves reflected in the world of quilting. The quilting industry continues to grow steadily, with U.S. market growth estimated in the 3–4% range annually, and the broader global market expanding closer to 5–6% CAGR.
