Racine police investigating fatal shooting of 36-year-old man
RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Racine police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened near Victory and Cleveland Street on Saturday, Feb. 26. Police identified the victim as 36-year-old Demond Hicks of Racine.
Hicks' family says they will not rest until they know who killed him.
"I wish I did because I think that would give me peace and justice," Antoinette Hicks said. She is Hicks' mother.
Officers were dispatched to the area around 3:45 a.m., and found Hicks laying in the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.
"We all say no parent deserves to bury their child first, but it's all in God's plan. I can't change it," Hicks said.
Hicks' family says he was the co-owner of Gifted Hands Group Home in Racine. And a man who genuinely loved people.
"Everybody loved him, looked up to him, respected him," said Hicks' mother.
"He was turning his life around, he was making a difference, he impacted children," De Andrae Woods said. Woods is Hicks' father.
Hicks was known as the family protector.
"He was the second dad, he left behind 14 siblings that if I could take the pain of each and every one of them I would, but we can't," Woods said.
Hicks leaves behind five children, four daughters and one son.
"What do I tell his five children that have to live the rest of their life without him? I can only feel the void so much," Hicks said. "I don't know if I'm going to be fine without him, he's my first born child."
