MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- From Madison to Milwaukee, people rallied as oral arguments took place over voting maps in Wisconsin Tuesday, Nov. 21.

One rally took place downtown, outside the Milwaukee State Office Building as community members joined others around Wisconsin in demanding what they call fair maps.

It's an effort of the Wisconsin Fair Maps Coalition as they claim gerrymandering is impacting the state's political sphere.

Those at the event told CBS 58, they want an independent and nonpartisan redistricting process and that the lawmaker's voter elect into office should be on board with that.

The organizations at the rally are also focused on engaging voters and ensuring they're able to vote on election day.

Souls to the Polls, an organization that gives people rides to their voting centers, was at the rally. Its president -- Gregory Lewis -- told CBS 58 this is the start of helping people see that their voice matters as they hope the judges find the maps unconstitutional and set aside partisan politics to put the people casting ballots first.

"It's got to be some point that we decide we're going to use some common sense. We shouldn't just let people draw maps just so they can be elected every time even though they don't have the most votes," said Lewis.

Lewis says a change to the maps would show people in Wisconsin their votes matter. He also stressed education, that people should read up on the issue to better understand it.
