MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Firefighters face significant stress daily, and the Milwaukee Fire Department is responding by discussing a mental health program in partnership with Ignite the Spirit-Milwaukee to offer fully funded therapy sessions to first responders.
The program comes as findings from the National Fire Protection Association show the health challenges associated with being a firefighter, such as PTSD, depression and anxiety due the demanding nature of the job.
Milwaukee Fire Chief Aaron Lipski expressed optimism about the program's impact on Monday, April 29.
"I'm hopeful we'll see our members learn how to breathe again, learn how to smile again, and learn how to really, really enjoy life again."
He also noted the broader benefits of the initiative, saying, "It's also going to benefit everybody outside these walls who call us. Because they're going to get better service, more creative service, innovative service."
Licensed therapists will conduct the therapy sessions, funded by Ignite the Spirit-Milwaukee. Additional information can be found by visiting Ignite the Spirit-Milwaukee online.
