Man charged in connection to deadly Milwaukee flag football shooting
WEST ALLIS, Wis. (CBS 58) – A local organization used Flag Day to remind veterans of resources in our community.
Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative hosted their 6th annual Bikes for Stripes Resource Fair on Friday, June 14, at the West Allis Farmers Market.
The event provides free bicycles for veterans and their families, donated by individuals and local police/fire departments.
More than 80 bicycles were given out this year.
"It's the recognition of heroes," said Debbie Buchanan, executive director of MHVI. "The West Allis community is very supportive of veterans, so allowing us to create a safe space, a safe environment where they can come and receive services is very important."
The event also featured more than a dozen community partners and organizations, providing resource information to veterans.
Buchanan said it's a great way to connect vets to the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative.
"We have an emergency food pantry, we have a resource center, so if a veteran needs anything from furniture to cleaning supplies, to emergency food, please come visit our office. We are here to serve you," Buchanan said.
MHVI has several events still this summer, including their Back-to-School resource fair, Aug.17 at Liberty Heights Park.
