NOW: Red Cross sees dip in blood donations, asking people to give blood as summer approaches
      NEXT:

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – The American Red Cross is asking people to continue giving blood as summer approaches.

The Red Cross says the need for blood is constant and in the last few weeks, donations have been down across the country.

Now, they’re asking people to give blood as they usually see fewer blood drives and donations during the summer.

“We’d love to still have you and you can still be part of that great solution of having blood on the shelves that really helps save lives,” American Red Cross of Wisconsin communications director Justin Kern said.

Throughout the pandemic, blood donations have been especially important and the Red Cross is still testing donations for COVID-19 antibodies.

“That can still be used for folks struggling through the worst of COVID,” Kern said. “We do want a lot of people, especially the first-time donors, who came out this past year to remember they can still make an impact throughout the summer as a donor.”

The antibodies not only needed to help COVID-19 patients, but blood needed for others.

“The need for blood is constant, people who are going through car accidents, people who are going through cancer treatments, all of those day to day and long-term needs for blood still exist,” he said.

According to Kern, anyone who’s been fully vaccinated doesn’t need to wait a certain time period to give blood, they are able to donate right away.
