Reproductive rights rally held as Wisconsin Supreme Court decision looms
MILWAUKEE (CBS58) -- Despite the heat dozens of demonstrators gathered in Milwaukee to join Reproductive Justice Action-Milwaukee to rally for reproductive rights.
This as the Supreme Court is days away from making a final ruling on abortion.
"There's a question of whether it's going to be legal or not pertaining to this 1849 law about whether it's referring to feticide size or if it's referring to abortion," said Blake Jones, Chair of Reproductive Justice Milwaukee.
On Sunday, protesters fought the heat as they made their voices heard.
"I think we are back in this position where we are afraid again but also want to be out there to show we ultimately have the power to make a difference," said Sara Onitsuka, protester.
In 2022 the Dobbs decision sent the issue to the states. Any day now, the Wisconsin Supreme Court will rule on the legality of abortion.
"We see it as an attack on bodily autonomy, and we see it needs to be restored, and people need to be able to make their own choices," said Jones.
As of right now, abortion is banned at 20 weeks after fertilization.
"There's a lot of confusion for Wisconsinites. We found out there's a lot of people in the public that don't know the current legality of abortion in Wisconsin or that it's even being offered again," said Jones.
June 24 will mark three years since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade.
"Roe v Wade was the floor there's already oppression of black pregnant people," said Lo Cross, protester.
The Chair of Reproductive Justice Action Milwaukee says it's the reason they were founded.
"Reproductive Justice Action Milwaukee was founded after the overturning of Roe v Wade in a Planned Parenthood parking lot. We started organizing instead of just accepting the conditions as they are," said Jones.
The Supreme Court will likely issue a ruling by the end of the month.
