SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The body of a 13-year-old boy who drowned in Sheboygan's Jayce Quarry Park on Tuesday was recovered a day later on July 16.

Authorities said the victim was located just before noon, after hours of searching using K-9s, sonar equipment, boats, and dive teams.

Crews from multiple agencies, including Calumet, Brown, Sheboygan and Manitowoc County, as well as the DNR and Public Works, helped in the search and recovery efforts.

The initial call came in shortly after 2 p.m. on July 15 for a report of a child who had been swimming with friends and went underwater despite his friends' efforts to help him.

But due to low visibility, the water's depths, and the underwater obstacles, his body was hard to locate, even though rescue crews arrived on scene less than five minutes after the call.

“There’s a lot of debris, a lot of obstacles. Our divers last night were getting entangled, this morning they were getting entangled," said Chief Eric Montellano with the City of Sheboygan Fire Department. “You want a successful outcome always, so it’s tough, especially when it’s a younger adult, so it really is tough.”

Family identified the boy as Antonio and remembered him for his "bright spirit."

"When he walked in a room, everybody knew who Antonio was," said cousin Queen Trotter. “And I’m just in disbelief right now that, you know, he’s gone.”

Trotter added that Antonio played sports, loved people, and hung out at the library playing online games.

Another cousin, Latricia Trotter, said she didn't believe that Antonio was a strong swimmer, but that his legacy would live on.

“Probably just trying to enjoy himself and trying to be like every kid that wanted to be out there," Trotter said. “You know, he was just being a kid, so we thank God that they found him.”

Family has setup a GoFundMe to help pay for Antonio's funeral.

The quarry remains closed Wednesday.
