MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The mixed martial arts community is remembering one of the top MMA coaches in the world.
Duke Roufus, a trainer to UFC and world MMA champions like Anthony and Sergio Pettis, Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley and more died on Friday, Oct. 17. He was 55 years old.
“This place gave me the confidence to be myself,” said Niko Marino, a Roufusport coach. “He’s created something so much more than just a gym here. This is like a community, a sanctuary.”
Inside Roufusport MMA Academy – athletes find more than just a sport. Christian Rodriguez has been coming for 13 years.
“Half my life now,” said Rodriguez.
It’s a place for athletes, founded by Roufus.
“Coach, to a friend, to a father figure,” said Rodriguez. “How much of a legend Duke was. How much respect the world gave him, you know.”
Just days after his death, at Roufusport, his students continue to train.
“Duke was the best, man,” said Marino. “I’m grateful for everything. For the time, for the attention, for the patience.”
To honor Roufus’s memory – and continue his legacy.
“That’s all because of Duke. Seriously,” said Marino.
