MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- In celebration of National Donut Day, veterans gathered at the Milwaukee VA for free donuts from the Salvation Army of Milwaukee County.
The organization established National Donut Day in 1938.
The day honors the "Donut Lassies" who traveled to the frontlines during WWI to provide essential supplies to the troops, along with, you guessed it - donuts.
"It's so fun to see all the veterans come in and out of their appointments, just to see the smiles on their faces, grab a donut," said Amy Hand, media relations director for the Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army also gave donuts to multiple Milwaukee Police Department locations across the county -- a thank you for their continued service to the community.
