MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Franklin High School has been buzzing this February, and it's not just because of the saws whirring in shop class. Assistant State Superintendent Dr. Keona Jones of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and several other education leaders visited the school this week in honor of Career & Technical Education Month.
District officials say this was a chance to show off all of the technical skills kids can learn at Franklin and then apply in real life. One class is welding, and another is doing laser engraving. Still another class is learning about electrical systems.
The younger students in the district are also benefiting from these classes. The district says in one high school course, “Revitalizing Education and Child Health,” the students have created virtual field trips for a first-grade class at Pleasant View.
School officials say currently more than 1,300 high school students are enrolled in a CTE course, and it's a point of pride for Franklin.
