Settlement reached in lawsuit filed by Milwaukee Co. supervisor against city over 2020 protests
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A settlement has been reached in a lawsuit Milwaukee County Supervisor Ryan Clancy filed against the city of Milwaukee in 2021.
The lawsuit alleged that during protests in May of 2020, officers tried to move protesters from Shorewood into Milwaukee since Milwaukee had a curfew while Shorewood didn't.
Clancy says protesters, including himself, were then arrested.
He also says the current mayor couldn't order a curfew without approval from the Common Council.
In a statement Tuesday, Dec. 12, Clancy said, "The goal of this case was never financial gain, but instead to shed light on the policies of law enforcement during largely peaceful protests."
In a responding statement, City Attorney Spencer Tearman said in exchange for dismissing the charges, he will "recommend to the Common Council a carve out to curfew requirements for legal observers and elected officials."
The city attorney will also clarify who has the power to call for a curfew.
