MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD) says a total of six paramedic units transported multiple victims of a Milwaukee apartment fire during the morning hours of Sunday, Feb. 1.

Crews responded to the scene near 77th and Green Tree Road and found a working fire in the first-floor common hallway, with residents hanging out of windows of a two-story, eight family dwelling.

Firefighters made several rescues by ladder from the second story windows.

The fire was upgraded to a second alarm, bringing in additional units to the scene, including the North Shore and Wauwatosa Fire Departments.

MFD says a total of six med units were called to the scene to treat and take injured patients to the hospital.

Crews also brought a county bus to the scene to temporarily shelter occupants that were out in the cold.

Fire Chief Aaron Lipski said that eight people were rescued including two infants.

A firefighter also sustained minor burn injuries while rescuing tenants, said Chief Lipski.

The building is currently uninhabitable. The MFD Fire Investigation Unit is on scene to determine cause and origin.

In a press release from Alderwoman Larresa Taylor, the building was not equipped with a sprinkler system. The statement showed support of efforts by Chief Lipski to change state law to "allow municipalities to mandate that sprinklers be installed in older apartment buildings."
