MOUNT PLEASANT, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Mount Pleasant Police Department announced the unexpected passing of K-9 Aspen Tuesday, July 21. 

The police department says Aspen, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois, suffered a sudden cardiac event during a training exercise. 

"Aspen's energy, loyalty, and unwavering commitment to his work made him an exceptional partner and a beloved member of our police family," the police department shared Tuesday. "His contributions to public safety and the bond he shared with his handler, Officer Zachary Giovannoni, and fellow officers will not be forgotten."

K-9 Aspen joined the police department in 2023.

"We will miss you, Aspen," MPPD wrote. "Thank you for your faithful service and dedication to the Mount Pleasant community."
