Skylight Music Theatre to present Bernstein's 'Candide'

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Skylight Music Theatre in Milwaukee is preparing to stage Leonard Bernstein's "Candide." The production, which will be directed and designed by James Ortiz, marks his return to the theatre.

Ortiz, known for his distinct creative approach, has chosen a 1950s setting for the adaptation of Voltaire's satirical narrative.

Based on Voltaire’s exploration of innocence, optimism and life’s unexpected twists, "Candide" chronicles the journeys of two young protagonists and their series of absurd and unfortunate events.

According to Skylight Music theatre, this rendition of "Candide" aims to provide an intersection between the worlds of musical theatre and opera and will serve as the production that opens their 2023-24 season.

The play is scheduled from Friday, Oct. 13 to Sunday, Oct. 29 at the Cabot Theatre in the Broadway Theatre Center, located in Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward.
