MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Racine's Chris King is trying to make some history. He's trying to break through in NHRA drag racing, as he recently appeared at an Admirals game.

"This is my home, ice. I grew up going to Admirals games," Racine native and NHRA Funny Car drag racer Chris King said. "Grew up wanting to play for the Admirals and you know, chase the NHL dream. But full circle? Here I am. And it's really cool to be on this side of it for once instead of up in the grandstands."

Racine native Chris King is a Chicago firefighter by day. And on weekends? He races funny car dragsters.

"Growing up in Racine? We're right in Union Grove's backyard," King said.  "So going to Great Lakes Dragaway. Broadway Bob. Sunday! Sunday! You know, you heard it on the radio and everything was so cool. So, I grew up there and just like wow, these guys are so awesome. These cars are insane. It's 12,000 horsepower. It pulls six G's of acceleration. The minute it fires up and you turn the fuel pumps on? And it starts thumping on nitro? Your heart just is like 'yeah, let's go!' So, pulling up to the staging beams, it's like you take that real deep breath. And it's like, okay, say your praises to Jesus and then hang on."
