Snapshot Day to set sail statewide in a hunt for aquatic invasive species 🐟
MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Aquatic invasive species are the focus of an upcoming statewide scavenger hunt, marking the tenth annual AIS Snapshot Day in Wisconsin.
Slated for Saturday, Aug. 19, this event calls upon water enthusiasts of various ages to aid in the identification and mapping of invasive flora and fauna such as Eurasian watermilfoil, purple loosestrife and New Zealand mudsnails.
Volunteers will gather at numerous locations around the state at 8:30 a.m. From these locations, they will disperse to nearby streams, lakes and wetlands to monitor these environments for AIS.
Among the locations in near CBS 58's viewing area include:
- Dane County Government Center in Madison
- Island Park in Racine
- Kiwanis Pond Park Shelter in Janesville
- Maywood Environmental Park in Sheboygan
- Miniwaukan Park in Mukwonago
- Sandy Knoll County Park in West Bend
- Walworth County Government Center in Elkhorn
The event, coordinated by UW Extension, River Alliance, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Extension Lakes, provides data to the WDNR for tracking invasive species and creating management plans. This data is uploaded to the SWIMS statewide water quality database, making it a vital tool in the fight against the spread of invasive species.
The event is suitable for ages eight and above, though minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Registration for this free event is recommended, with event details available by clicking here.
