Some voices never leave: Mural to honor broadcaster Bob Uecker
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- For generations of Brewers fans, Bob Uecker wasn’t just a part of baseball; he was a part of Milwaukee. Now, the city is honoring him with a new mural celebrating the humor and personality he brought to the game.
For generations of baseball fans, that voice was a part of summer.
Not just the crack of the bat or the cheers from the stadium, but the familiar sound of Uecker drifting through the radio.
“To me, he’s a legend, for sure,” said Anthony Brewer, a local artist.
Now, that voice is becoming something people can see.
“Best announcer out there,” said Kristen Boucher, Uecker fan. “I couldn’t think of a better guy to put on the wall."
In downtown Milwaukee, a mural is starting to take shape to honor the larger-than-life broadcaster who died last year.
“Right now, I’m in the process of prepping the plural with white primer to ultimately hold all the color and all the artwork on it,” said Mauricio Ramirez.
Ramirez, the man behind the mural, is no stranger to honoring Milwaukee legends.
“Have it have a message, have it have a story, and have it resonate with a community,” said Ramirez.
In 2022, Ramirez painted the Giannis Antetokounmpo mural around the corner.
“Really says something, the type of work and the type of people we’d like to honor,” said Ramirez.
Over the course of the next few weeks, Ramirez will use about 150 gallons of paint to bring this mural to life.
For more than five decades, Uecker turned ballgames into memories. He made listeners feel like family.
“The way that he just transcended beyond baseball and into American culture, television, and entertainment,” said Ramirez.
Come June, Milwaukee will have one more reminder that some voices never leave.
“It’s not just a looky-loo type of thing. It’s a feeling, it’s a vibe, it’s an aura that you get when you see something that you resonate with,” said Brewer.
