MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police say a 38-year-old man was fatally shot by officers Tuesday night, during a chase that ended near 98th and Lisbon.

According to MPD Chief Jeffrey Norman, officers attempted to stop the man for a registration violation near Fond du Lac and W. Locust just before 5 p.m. The suspect initially stopped, then took off, and a pursuit began.

The chase ultimately ended when the suspect exited his vehicle near 98th and Lisbon and ran. During a foot pursuit, police say the suspect was seen holding a gun. Chief Norman says officers ordered the man to drop the firearm, but the suspect refused and the officers fired, striking him.

The suspect was taken to an area hospital where he died of his injuries.

"Understanding this is an ongoing investigation, what we do know is the suspect still had the firearm as the individual was being pursued by the officer," Chief Norman said during a press conference Tuesday night. "So, we're still interviewing the officers. We'll find out more details a little bit later."

The officers involved include a 46-year-old man with over 10 years of service and a 40-year-old man with over eight years of service. They will be placed on administrative routine as is routine in officer-involved shootings.

Chief Norman says he has seen body camera video, which will be made public within 15 days.

"We did get a chance to review the body worn cameras," Chief Norman said. 'Basically, what I told you is in line with what we saw. But, as always, we will be releasing the video. First letting the family review that before releasing it to the public."

Milwaukee police say they continue to seek a known passenger of the vehicle, who took off on foot during the pursuit.

The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team will be investigating the incident. The Brookfield Police Department is the lead investigating agency.
