South Milwaukee School District: Bullet found in 6th grade classroom

SOUTH MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A bullet was found on the floor of a six grade classroom in the South Milwaukee School District Monday, March 20.

According to South Milwaukee police, a 9mm bullet was located but a firearm was not found.

Immediately after the bullet was discovered, police say the middle school administration and the police department resource officers set a plan in place to ensure the safety of all students.

Police say a thorough search of belongings and persons of the students who had access to the area was necessary. Approximately 40 students were searched.

"Student and staff safety is our primary concern. The presence of a live round is alarming and dangerous. Given the presence of the bullet, it’s the responsibility of the District to ensure no firearms were brought to school," the South Milwaukee Police Department said in a post.

Police are encouraging parents to talk to their children about not bringing unsafe items to school.
