Special Olympics Wisconsin celebrating the 25th annual Polar Plunge

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Special Olympics Wisconsin is rallying residents to brace for the ultimate cold challenge for a noble cause, marking their preparations for the 25th anniversary of the iconic Polar Plunge.

The organization, known for its support for athletes with disabilities, is set to host its landmark event in 2024, aiming to deliver another year of chills and thrills for a good cause.

Special Olympics Wisconsin President & CEO Chad Hershner, in a press release on Friday, Dec. 8, reflected on the event's 25-year journey. "We are thrilled to celebrate 25 years of the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Wisconsin. We have some great new locations on tap for 2024, and we are working hard to elevate this largest annual fundraising event for the organization."

Adding accessibility is one mission of the next version of the event, with the inclusion of the Inclusive Plunge, a first of its kind, ADA-compliant plunge experience.

The 2024 Polar Plunge will unfold across eight locations, spanning six Saturdays. These locations include Wisconsin Rapids at Anchor Bay Bar & Grill on Feb. 3, Oshkosh at Menominee Park on Feb. 10, Madison at Lottes Park on Feb. 17, Green Bay at Perkofski Boat Launch and Milwaukee at Fox Brook Park on Feb. 24, Chippewa Falls at Loopy’s Grill & Saloon and La Crosse at Black River Beach on Mar. 2 and concluding in Whitewater at Whitewater Aquatic Center on Mar. 9.

Participation avenues extend beyond the traditional plunge. The Alternative Plunge allows supporters to create their own chilly experience by dumping a bucket of ice water on their heads and taking the experience to social media.

Incentives await those who raise a minimum of $100, including collectible merchandise adorned with Special Olympics Wisconsin or 25th anniversary logos.

More information and registration can be found at PlungeWI.org. While pre-registration is recommended, on-site registration on the day of the event is also available. All proceeds go towards Special Olympics Wisconsin.
