MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — An original Pablo Picasso etching stolen from a Milwaukee art gallery in 2018 has been recovered after a community member turned it in to police Wednesday.

The artwork, "Trero, 1949," is valued between $35,000 and $50,000. It was stolen from DeLind Fine Art Appraisals LLC in February 2018.

Police said an authenticator examined the etching Thursday and confirmed it was the stolen piece.

The artwork had been registered with stolen-art databases in London and New York.

Following the theft in 2018, DeLind Fine Art Appraisals co-owner Michael Goforth said the company believed the crime may have been opportunistic or that the Picasso was specifically targeted because it was displayed in a window and visible from outside.

A $5,000 reward had been offered for the artwork's return.

Milwaukee police thanked the community member who recognized the etching and brought it to the department.

"We are better together," police said.
