MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A new education initiative was unveiled in Madison Tuesday, to help students succeed in today's workforce.

Introduced by Wisconsin Superintendent Jill Underly, "Portrait of a Graduate" focuses on skills knowledge and experiences needed to succeed after high school. The effort is designed to gather feedback from Wisconsinites to create a shared vision for student success.

A press release from the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) references "a world far different from the one graduates faced even just a few years ago," noting "significant changes" in artificial intelligence and technology as well as the rising costs of living and a changing housing market.

"The Wisconsin 'Portrait of a Graduate' will be a shared vision for what it means to be ready for life after high school, regardless of what path a graduate chooses," Dr. Underly said. "If we want our graduates to succeed in this evolving landscape, our definition of success must evolve with it."

DPI says a steering committee made up of educators, students, employers, higher education partners, education organizations and representatives from industries statewide will guide the initiative.

There will be two upcoming listening sessions, which are open to the public:

"We want to broaden Wisconsin’s vision for student success,” Dr. Underly said. “The world our students are preparing to enter is changing quickly, and it is critical that we hear directly from the people who know our communities best. Academic rigor is always a top priority and will not change, but we also need to ensure students leave our schools prepared to think critically, adapt, communicate, solve problems, and thrive.”
