MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Brewers fans are always looking for creative ways to show off their team spirit, and one Wisconsin inventor is putting a whole new cap on that idea.

Alex Giampietro, owner of Cream City Originals, is the creator of Bottle Cap Hats — oversized bottle caps that fans can wear on their heads to cheer on the home team.

The hats are made in Manitowoc using polyurethane foam.

While the hats may be new, the idea behind them has been brewing for years.

Giampietro says the inspiration came when he was just a kid watching a Brewers playoff game with his dad.

"So, I was just a little kid watching a playoff game with my dad, and it was during a commercial break... you know how they cut to fans? And there is a fan wearing a cheesehead and I kind of as a passing thought was like, why don't the Brewers do their own thing?" Giampietro said.

He recalled suggesting a beer bottle cap as an alternative, and his father telling him they would revisit the idea later.

"All these years later, the team was right, the timing was right, and we made it happen," Giampietro said.

After years of developing the concept, Giampietro also secured a patent for his invention.

Now, that childhood idea is helping Brewers fans top off their team spirit.
