NOW: Vance addresses Catholic voters at campaign event in Waukesha

WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Republican Vice Presidential Nominee JD Vance made a stop in Waukesha on Sunday, Oct. 20, speaking directly to Catholic voters at the Waukesha Regional Airport.

The Republican Senator from Ohio made several comments about how his campaign with Former President Donald Trump will support the values of Catholic families. Vance made multiple statements criticizing Harris and what he said was a lack of support for Christians.

“Why does it seem that Kamala Harris seems to think that Christians are a bigger threat to this country than the Mexican drug cartels that she has let run rampant all over this country?" Vance said. "It's a disgrace."

The latest Pew Research Center survey, conducted Aug. 26-Sept. 2, 2024, found that 61% of White Catholics are leaning toward Trump. That same survey found that 65% of Hispanic Catholics support Vice President Kamala Harris and her campaign on the Democratic ticket.

"I think Christians are going to turn out and win for Donald Trump," Vance said. "If they do, we are going to win."

Catholic voters who went to Vance's event in Waukesha said that the Republican ticket shares their values.

“I think that morals and a family faith and a religious standing is essential to making sure that political decisions are grounded," said Joe Klinzing, a Republican voter.

“You aren’t going to get faith, family and freedom outside of Donald and Vance," said Karen Behny, a Republican voter.

Both the Republican and Democratic campaigns will be looking to convince this voting base to cast ballots in their favor. This Waukesha event is especially important for Republicans looking to keep their strong voting base in the area.

On Sunday, Oct. 20, ahead of JD Vance's visit to Waukesha, Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez and local leaders spoke at a canvas launch to remind voters what a Trump presidency would look like for Americans.

Wisconsin Democratic Coordinated Campaign Rapid Response Director Kristi Johnston released the following statement in response to JD Vance’s plans to visit Waukesha, Wisconsin:

“JD Vance has been too busy defending Donald Trump’s increasingly unhinged and extreme behavior over the past month to campaign in Wisconsin – all while Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz have been traveling across our state sharing their plans to lower costs, protect reproductive freedoms, and chart a new way forward. His trip will remind Wisconsinites that a second Trump term would be even more dangerous than the first, with his Project 2025 agenda giving him virtually unchecked power and control over our daily lives, with essentially no guardrails.”
