WATERTOWN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Watertown Police Department is investigating the theft of a Flock camera that took place on Thursday, Sept. 24, according to the department.

Police say the cameras help identify people who commit crimes and assist in locating missing people and abducted children, calling the theft a deliberate attack on public safety infrastructure.

The department said it is aware of ongoing public discussions about the use of Flock cameras but argue that committing a crime is not a valid form of protest, and that anyone who damages or steals the equipment will face investigation and possible criminal charges.
