'We were really scared:' Neighbors react to deadly shooting in Waukesha that claimed life of grandmother
WAUKESHA, Wis. -- After a Waukesha man was arrested for allegedly killing his grandmother and engaging in a police standoff on Sunday, neighbors say they never could have imagined something like that happening in their quiet neighborhood.
The incident began around 8:30 p.m. when law enforcement received reports of gunfire near Douglas and Grand. Police responded to the scene and used drone technology to notice a woman in the home who appeared to be deceased.
Police spent hours aiming to arrest the man, who they eventually carried out of the home on the 200 block of Douglas Avenue.
“It’s sad, it’s shocking too, because it was just a regular day," said Emmanuel Guerrero Arregiuin, who lives across the street from the house where the deadly shooting happened. “We were scared that if he was going to shoot the officers, he would probably miss and probably hit us.”
Zach McGowan, another neighbor who lived across the street, recorded audio of the gunshots through his home surveillance system. He said he was sad the elderly woman in his community died in such a violent way.
“She was so sweet," McGowen said. "Every interaction we had with her was very friendly, very cordial. She just seemed like a very nice person.”
McGowen said the long police standoff created a lot of noise in the neighborhood, and he wasn't able to sleep well. Both neighbors said the events from Sunday night were rare for their peaceful neighborhood.
“It’s a quiet neighborhood. You see your neighbor mowing the lawn, probably walking their dog," said Guerrero Arregiuin.
