MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The bitter cold can have some harsh impacts on our cars.

CBS 58 has spoken to more than a dozen mechanics and all said that they're busy today servicing customers ahead of the holiday. There are some important reminders drivers should know before they hit the roads.

"The biggest thing you can do in the wintertime on snowy roads is take your time," said Riverside automotive mechanic Ryne Prinz."

Cars and cold. It can often be a tricky combination.

At Riverside Automotive, owner Peter Bilgo says dangerously low temperature tend to have the greatest impact on your battery.

"The extreme cold, anytime you have a marginal battery, it will cause a plethora of issues, lights that go on," said Bilgo.

"People's batteries will die more often in the cold weather, even if you're not leaving the house, warming it at least once a day. Cold air contracts, warm air expands," said Prinz.

Another cold concern is your tires.

"We have a worn out tire and, on my right, we have a brand new tire. This is a bit of an extreme example, you don't want to let it get to this point," said Prinz.

Proper tire tread is key.

"On this tire here, you can see a lot more tread," said Prinz. "This is a brand new tire, the wear bar is right there."

Lastly, check your oil and fluids. When temperatures drop, car fluids can thicken, impacting vehicle performance. And even if you feel like your car is ready to roll.

"The smartest thing is if you don't have to go out when it's bitterly cold, don't go out," Bilgo.

Another important reminder -- you might want to have an emergency kit inside your car with blankets and water, and other items you may need if you happen to get stranded.
