WILLIAMS BAY, Wis, (CBS 58) -- Monday marks the fifth consecutive day that people in Williams Bay have been told not to use the village tap water.
People are being told not to drink the water, cook with it, or use it for activities like brushing your teeth.
Several tourists were in the popular vacation destination on Monday to wrap up their Labor Day weekend trips, including Christian Moore, visiting from Illinois.
“The first thing I do when I wake up is go to the sink and brush my teeth, wash my hands and all that,” Moore said. “Not being able to do that is just kind of out of this world to me.”
Drew Olson was also visiting from Illinois with his wife and three kids.
“We did a little bit of research before we came up here and had to tell the kids no drinking out of the sink and use bottled water to brush our teeth, and that kind of stuff,” Olson said.
High levels of nitrites were found in the water, which led to the current water situation.
“We loaded up on a couple cases of water and just were a little extra cautious of the house, but in general, it hasn’t really impacted our weekend,” Olson said. “We still had a great time and were still able to enjoy everything they have going on up here.”
Williams Bay students and teachers will be back in the classroom on Tuesday for the first day of school.
All water fountains will be turned off, with signs telling students the water is off, and there will be portable water stations throughout the school.
“It’s business as usual, we’ve got water coolers in all the hallways where the drinking fountains are, and then every classroom’s got water bottles, so we’re treating it like a normal day,” Williams Bay School Director of Buildings and Grounds Ryan Quinn said.
