Wisconsin DMV introduces new ‘B’ series license plates

Wisconsin Department of Transportation

MADISION, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles will begin issuing a new series of license plates starting with the letter ‘B’ after exhausting all combinations beginning with ‘A.’

The transition was announced on Thursday, Feb. 6 and follows nearly eight years of issuing 4.7 million letter and number combinations under the current format.

The first ‘B’ series plates will begin with BAA and continue through millions of combinations, a process expected to take about seven years. Wisconsin’s seven-character plate format, introduced in 2017, allows for approximately 100 million possible combinations.

Drivers seeking to replace older plates can request the new series online by clicking here.
