Wisconsin DOT emphasizes bicycle safety as more cyclists take to the roads

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- As springtime arrives in Wisconsin, increased bicycle usage is seen throughout the state. With warmer temperatures, more cyclists are hitting the roads, sharing lanes with motor vehicles.

In response, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation has designated bicycle safety as the law of the month for May, according to a Thursday, May 9 press release.

The DOT cites a figure that notes an average of 705 bicycle-related incidents occurring annually in the state, with 2023 data showing seven cyclists died and 699 were injured statewide.

Drivers are reminded by the DOT of their responsibilities for maintaining safety on the road, including to slow down when they see cyclists, use caution due to the smaller profile of bicycles and look twice before turning or changing lanes. Those parking along the street should check mirrors and surroundings before opening doors to avoid causing a cyclist to lose balance or crash.

State law also prohibits vehicles from driving in bicycle lanes except for specific situations, and motorists must stay at least three feet away from bicycles.

Bicyclists are urged to do their part to promote safety, including wearing protective gear such as helmets, following traffic laws and signals and being aware of their surroundings, including checking for vehicles behind them when changing lanes and using caution near intersections.

Cyclists are also required by state law to use lights and reflectors in the dark and signal their intentions, along with staying visible by wearing bright or reflective clothing.
