WEST ALLIS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin State Fair has extended its hours for its Military Appreciation Day Promotion on Sunday, August 9, due to the morning and afternoon storms throughout the area.

In a statement on its website, State Fair officials said they are extending the promotion admission hours until 6:00 p.m.: 

"It looks like it should be a beautiful afternoon! We are happy to extend today’s admission promotion to 6pm. We’ll continue to closely monitor the weather conditions as it relates to our day’s programming."

Shortly before 12:00 p.m., State Fair Park entrances and gates and some buildings were temporarily closed due a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. 

In an updated statement, state fair officials told CBS 58: 

"When the National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning today, we notified our Fairgoers through social media and our public address system to seek shelter," said Tim McCormick, a State Fair representative.

"We needed to put a hold on some of the entrances so our employees could also seek shelter. Our rides had to cease operation until lightning left the area. The storm lasted 30 minutes, and the lightning was fully out of the area 30 minutes later. Today’s Network Health Member & Military Appreciation Day promotion has been extended until 6 p.m."
