Wisconsin urges fire safety during holiday celebrations

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Wisconsin Emergency Management, through its ReadyWisconsin initiative, is reaching out to the public to stress the importance of fire safety during the festive season.

As households across the state prepare to celebrate the holidays with traditional decorations, there's an increased risk of fire hazards. ReadyWisconsin aims to offer practical advice to ensure Wisconsinites can enjoy their festivities without compromising safety.

Candles, while a popular decorative item, are a significant cause of home decoration fires, as reported by the National Fire Protection Association. ReadyWisconsin advises keeping candles at least 12 inches away from flammable materials and never leaving them unattended. Battery-operated flameless candles are suggested as alternatives.

Concerning holiday lights, especially those adorning Christmas trees, it is crucial to inspect them for worn or broken cords and loose bulb connections. Lights should not be overloaded, and it's recommended to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for safe usage. Turning off all lights when leaving the house or going to bed is also recommended.

Regarding Christmas trees, live trees should be watered daily and placed at least three feet away from heat sources. The importance of kitchen safety during holiday gatherings is also highlighted, with recommendations to keep decorations away from stoves and ovens and to have a fire extinguisher accessible.

Wisconsin Emergency Management Administrator Greg Engle said in a Thursday, Nov. 30 press release, "While we all enjoy the festive atmosphere that decorations bring, it's essential to prioritize safety. Simple steps like checking electrical wires and being cautious with candles can significantly reduce fire risks during the holidays."
