Woman charged after 4-year-old shoots 8-year-old gets probation

NOW: Woman charged after 4-year-old shoots 8-year-old gets probation

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee woman will spend two years on probation after a 4-year-old boy shot her 8-year-old daughter inside her home.

Nakia Piggee, 28, was charged in November of 2024 with four counts of child neglect after authorities say she left a disabled 2-year-old, a 4-year-old, and a 9-year-old home along for 30 minutes. In that time, the children accessed a firearm Piggee says was hidden under a mattress, and her daughter was shot in the back. She needed to undergo surgery.

Judge Anderson Gansner said there's a lesson to be learned here about gun safety.

"It wasn't on some high shelf, it wasn't locked in a gun safe," said Gansner. "Essentially if it's under a mattress, it's in arms reach for any child."

Piggee's attorney said thankfully her daughter has completely recovered from the gunshot wound.

Piggee has since completed court ordered parenting classes and must complete community service while under probation.
